I was the first mayoral candidate to comment on the Unitary Plan and the National Business Review has published my views that although there has been a big increase in potential housing development, the costs of this will be significant.
The Hearings Panel has recommended a 22% reduction in the single house zone (the least intense residential zone) and a 25% increase in townhouses and apartments. It also proposes a 30% increase in the rural urban boundary and has also abandoned affordability and character protections.
We have a housing crisis in Auckland and need big growth in affordable housing, but it’s the council that has been the biggest cause of slow progress by not funding new development adequately and being too slow to process consents.
