The leading Auckland mayoral candidates were asked what we would do to deal with homelessness at a recent debate.
I wrote an article in the Herald in May outlining my approach which involves using vacant/surplus council property as a short-term shelter to help government and other support agencies provide the permanent help needed.
Stuff picked up our responses from the debate. My Labour MP opponent Phil Goff suggested using the government owned old Mt Eden prison – which continues his approach of focusing on things he doesn’t control or are inappropriate.
My plan for an Auckland that works involves using more of the levers the mayor of Auckland controls first.
