Reducing Food Waste

Nearly one third of the food waste produced for human consumption gets wasted every year.

The UN estimates this costs nearly $US1 trillion dollars a year. That’s the annual GDP of Indonesia or three Singapore’s wasted each year.

Singapore, who leads the world in many city benchmarks, has struggled with waste reuse and recycling.

But the government is taking action. From next year, 250 shopping malls and all of the 1200 hotels over 200 rooms must weigh the waste they discard and also track that which is reused and recycled. They must also provide a waste reduction plan.

The goal is a substantial 30% waste reduction in year 1.
