Last month’s rail punctuality stats tell a sobering story. The issue is not just the plunge since December caused by computer, braking and staffing issues associated with the new electric trains – although this is serious. The bigger problem is the inconsistent punctuality over the last two years. As the graph shows, there is no more than a two month period of improving punctuality – before it drops. Although usually above the 85% standard, the up and down rail punctuality trend is one of the bigger day-to-day problems facing Auckland transport’s leadership. Because, as Auckland Transport’s “Key Customer Driver” graphic shows, reliability factors are right at the top in importance. The Mayor understandably associates himself with the good news: the big increase in rail passengers numbers, but a Mayor with greater awareness of the detail would focus on the challenge of sustaining this.
