My Auckland mayoral opponent Phil Goff and I have very different views over the Ports of Auckland.
My five and half years on council and many conversations with Aucklanders tells me we have other priorities to deliver ahead of moving the port – such as better transport and more affordable housing.
The port can exist on its current location for decades to come. We can stop it extending further into the harbour, have it continue to improve its efficiency and greatly improve the public space access – without the significant distraction and costs of a move.
There are also transport upgrades that will need to be made around the port to cope with traffic congestion – even if the decision is made to move.
