Leighton Smith, NewstalkZB’s morning host, was discussing the Information Technology blowout at Auckland Council. But the next Mayor needs to be able to stretch beyond just IT as there are bigger issues than this. Fixing council’s project oversight and funding problems requires a good understanding across all of council. Five years as a member of Auckland Council has given me that. He read my note to him out on air.
“Hi Leighton, the council budget problems extend beyond just IT – although it is one of the worst examples. I’ve included some links to staffing, transport (and other) problems below.
I’m actually attending the Council Controlled Organisations Monitoring Committee meeting at council this morning.
The current Mayor doesn’t provide enough oversight of these large projects and he’s not at this meeting where we are getting the quarterly updates from all 6 CCOs.
I worked at ANZ, NZ’s largest bank, when we started the IT amalgamation project which has cost one fifth of the current council budget.
The next Mayor needs both a real world business background working with large projects as well as an understanding of the political and local government challenges.
After 5 years being part of Auckland Council and 20 years in business and politics I know what needs to change.
