Council officers presented a 198 page (!) report today on the impact of Len Brown’s 2013 policy to introduce free under 16’s swimming.
There were some positive findings, but it mainly told us there’s been a 10% drop in kids actually swimming – as well as significant operational challenges at some of the new “free” pools.
The policy hasn’t worked well.
We could have funded even more free swimming for the cost of doing the report! We spend too much time and too much cost writing reports to tell us things we already knew.
As Auckland Mayor, I’ll use my council, political and business experience to deliver better policy – and it won’t cost us as much.
