COMET (the Auckland Community Education Trust), an Auckland Council ratepayer funded education and skills agency, has proposed an Auckland Languages Strategy where all Aucklanders will speak 3 languages: English, Maori and one other.
This will require some work as 72% of us currently speaking only one language.
I live in a multi-cultural household and completely understand the value of speaking more than one language, but with all the challenges Auckland faces – is this a priority for council at the moment?
I commented in the Fairfax story that: “If the agency was trying to fill the gap between the education sector and the employment market why wasn’t private enterprise contributing [more]”.
